Today’s Tip

Have you considered retraining to upgrade your teaching skills? It may be worth the effort! Below is information from the NSW Department of Education and Training's website at www.det.nsw.edu.au/employment: If you are a qualified teacher with approval to teach with the NSW Department of Education and Training, you may be considering a career change, without leaving the profession. Retraining could provide that opportunity. Because retraining recognises your existing qualifications, skills and experience, you can gain approval to teach in another teaching area in the minimum period of time. Retraining opportunities are available for teachers in a number of curriculum areas including mathematics, science (physics) and TAS (engineering studies). They are also available in specialist teaching areas including special education, school counselling, careers advising, teacher librarianship, English as a second language and reading recovery tutoring. Retraining programs are rigorous tertiary programs that are delivered by universities and TAFE Institutes. These delivering institutions may be located across Australia. Delivery is usually through full-time face to face or part-time distance modes. The period of training for full-time programs varies from 6 months to 12 months. For part-time programs the period of training may be up to 2 years. Apart from a tertiary training component, retraining programs include a number of support features such as an orientation and school based mentoring support. On completion of retraining you will be appointed to a school in an area of staffing need, in western or south-western Sydney or in a non-coastal rural area. If you wish to explore the opportunity to retrain you need to submit an application form with references and attend an interview. Applicants selected for interview will have met the relevant curriculum or specialist teaching area benchmarks, will already be successful teachers, and will have demonstrated their capacity to undertake an intensive and challenging program of study. Retraining is a wonderful professional experience. It will provide you with the opportunity to acquire new knowledge and teaching skills, learn with and from innovative lecturers and motivated colleagues, develop your confidence as a teacher, and broaden your career advancement opportunities. For more information go to the subject or specialist area of your choice under Retraining Program Information.
